COFFEE HUNTERS STORY

In 1999, Hawaii Coffee Growers Association (HCGA) requested Dr. Chifumi Nagai of Hawaii Agriculture Research Center (HARC) to crossbreed various coffee species to create new, hybrid species. One of the hybrid species introduced by this research was “MAMO” . It was Tommy, the owner of the Greenwell Farms and an enthusiastic coffee researcher himself, who took notice of “MAMO” . “MAMO” is an artificially crossed cultivar between “Maragogipe” and “Moca” , which produces the largest and smallest coffee beans respectively under Coffee Arabica. Tommy planted in his coffee farm and worked studiously to maximize the huge potential of this hybrid. After many years, he finally succeeded in developing cultivar yields of convincingly tasty coffee. It was Dr. Nagai who named this new cultivar, which until then only had a research identification number, as “MAMO” . The name “MAMO” combined the first syllables from the names “Maragogipe” and “Moca” ,andwhichcoincidentallyhasameaningof“Descendant”intheHawaiianlanguage.

Vintage characteristics

【Flavor Profile】A distinctive taste from the combination of the Moca's juicy flavor and Maragogipe strong flavor. It is characterized by its sweetness and the fresh tartness like hops.

2020

Possessing a similar plant flavor, like the Typica grown in the soil of Kona, it has an outstanding personality with its glossy acidity, full-body like a Bordeaux wine, and texture reminiscent of steamed chestnuts and sweet potatoes. The different complexions emerge as the coffee cools keeping you entertained until the last sip.

2018

It is possible to enjoy its richness from the refreshing taste like caraway seeds and Campari. A bitterness continues after a hoppy kick. It has a very distinctive sweetness to the core and a light acidity.

2017

The coffee has an exquisite balance featuring the characteristics of both “Moca” and “Maragogipe” . It has a particular fragrance and tastinessonyourtongueuniqueto“Moca” ,andthecitrusaromawithspicyandsweetflavoruniqueto“Maragogipe” .Therich aftertaste similar to dark beer with adequate bitterness provides pleasant texture as it flows down the throat.
